SMA Data Manager - PV system controller

Edit

SMA Data Manager - PV system controller

Description

  • Device class: system controller for a PV plant. It monitors and limits the SMA inverters and the energy meter that it manages.
  • Brand: SMA
  • Name in My Devices: SMA Data Manager
  • EDMM-10: SMA Data Manager M, up to 50 devices
  • EDMM-10.A: SMA Data Manager M Lite, up to 5 devices and 30 kVA. Some values are not available on this model.
  • EDMM-US-10: SMA Data Manager M, US version
  • EDML-10: SMA Data Manager L
  • Serial number: read from the Data Manager when you add it

LoggerV Connection

Interface Protocol Port or baud rate
Ethernet Modbus TCP 502 by default
RS485 Modbus RTU LoggerV port Bus Speed
  • Not used on installed sites: RS485. The RS485 port (X2) of the Data Manager connects its own Modbus devices. Its Modbus server is on Ethernet only.
  • Modbus Slave ID: 2. The Data Manager keeps the plant values on Modbus address 2. Address 1 holds information about the Data Manager only, and the LoggerV does not accept it.

Plant Control Functions

  • PV plant: an active power limit, as a percentage of the rated PV power, written to the Data Manager in each control cycle. The Data Manager applies the limit to the inverters that it controls.
  • Reported to plant control: the rated PV power, the total energy fed in, the PV active and reactive power, and the grid state (grid present when the grid frequency is above 20 Hz).
  • Not commanded: reactive power, quick shut-down, the active and reactive power control modes

Set the signal source for active power on the Data Manager to Modbus. With a different signal source, the limit from the LoggerV does not change the inverters.

Wiring

The Add-Device wizard makes the connection diagrams; see How to add a device in myPower24.

  • LoggerV interface: Ethernet
  • Network ports of the Data Manager: X4 and X5. The two ports are a switch, so either port is correct.
  • Network cable: minimum Cat5e, shielded (S/UTP, F/UTP or better), RJ45 plugs. Cat7 plugs do not fit.
  • Cable length: 50 m maximum with patch cables, 100 m maximum with installation cables
  • IP address: the Data Manager uses DHCP by default. The LoggerV connects to one IP address, so give the Data Manager a fixed address or a DHCP reservation.
  • Function button, 10 to 15 seconds: resets the password and the administrator account of the Data Manager. 15 to 20 seconds resets the Data Manager to the default settings.

Setup

  1. Connect the network cable as the generated diagram shows.
  2. Commission the Data Manager with its installation assistant, if this is not done. Enter the total PV array power in Total system power.
  3. Activate the Modbus server on the Data Manager. The Modbus server works on Modbus TCP only.
  4. On the Data Manager, open Configuration > Grid management services. In the Active power row, select Configuration and activation. Select the operating mode Closed loop or Open loop, select the signal source Modbus, and click Save.
  5. Add the device on the LoggerV; see How to add a device in myPower24.
  6. Type the IP address of the Data Manager in IP Address:.
  7. Type the Modbus TCP port in TCP Port:. The default is 502.
  8. Type 2 in Modbus Slave ID:.
  9. Click Try to connect.
  10. Open Info. Compare Rated PV Power on the Nameplate card with the total system power of the plant.
  11. Open Actual Data. Make sure that PV Feed-in Active Power and Grid Frequency at PCC show values.

Device Page

  • Info: General Info and Nameplate. Nameplate shows Rated PV Power.
  • Actual Data: Status, Energy Counters, Grid Meter (PCC), Limits & Digital Inputs
  • Advanced Data: Battery, Grid (Advanced), Power Limitation Channels, Generating System Availability, Environmental Sensors
  • Settings, Control group: Quick Shut-down of the Inverters, Active Power Control Mode, Reactive Power Control Mode, Active Power Setpoint P, Manually Set Active Power Limit (Entire System), PV Control Active Power Limitation (Highres)
  • Healthy link: Device Status shows OK, PV Feed-in Active Power changes with the sun, and Grid Frequency at PCC shows the grid frequency
  • Battery card: shows values only when a battery inverter is in the system
  • Environmental Sensors card: shows values only after you configure the sensors on the Data Manager and activate them in its Modbus interface

Quick Shut-down of the Inverters set to Full stop (AC and DC sides) stops every inverter that the Data Manager controls. Set it to Start to start them again.

Troubleshooting

  • "Failed to scan ID (Expected slave ID to not be 1, but was 1)": the Modbus Slave ID is 1. Type 2.
  • "Failed to scan ID": the LoggerV did not get the serial number from the Data Manager. Examine the IP address and the TCP port. Make sure that the Modbus TCP server of the Data Manager is active.
  • Data stops after a Data Manager firmware update: the Data Manager can stop answering a register that the LoggerV reads. When one settings register fails, the LoggerV marks the full device offline. Update the LoggerV to 9.337 or later. If the data does not come back, record the logger serial number and contact SolarMD support.
  • Very large values on the charts: the Data Manager sends a NaN value for data it does not have. LoggerV 9.314 and later record these values as zero.

Permissions

  • See the device page and the recorded data: any access level
  • Change settings, including Quick Shut-down of the Inverters: Editor, Installer or Full control
  • With Viewer only: the device page shows View-only on this site.
  • About the levels: see Access levels field definitions

No setting of this device needs the advanced device capability.

Tips and Gotchas

  • Plant control and the manual limit: plant control writes its limit to the same register as Manually Set Active Power Limit (Entire System) and PV Control Active Power Limitation (Highres). Plant control replaces a value that you set manually at its next request.
  • Communication loss: when the limit stops, the Data Manager keeps the last value or changes to its fallback value, as set in its fallback settings. Set the fallback time to 3 times the plant control cycle time or more. Set the fallback value as the grid operator requires.
