Notification categories and settings field definitions

What this is

Every category, channel, rung and label on the Notification settings page, and on a plant's Notifications tab, which shows the same cells. The steps are in Choose what you are notified about; the page tour is Notification Settings.

The categories

Six rows, in this order. "Default" is the built-in behaviour when nothing is set.

• Logger offline - the plant's logger stopped reporting. Default: in-app bell only. Recovery is silent: the entry closes when the logger returns, with no second notification.
• Device fault - a device raised a critical fault. Default: in-app bell only.
• Device warning - a device raised a minor issue. Default: in-app bell only.
• Logger system - routine system-level messages from the logger. Default: in-app bell only.
• Account / access - things done to your account, such as organisation invitations and access granted or revoked. Always on, email and bell, locked.
• Smart alerts - an alert you built yourself on a logger fired or cleared. Default: in-app bell only. Every Smart Alert arrives here whatever severity you gave it.

The bell can also show an account reminder (an unverified email address, say). It has no row here and no settings.

The channels

• Email - sent to your account's email address.
• In-app bell - the Notifications tab of the floating help button, bottom right, with an unread badge. Repeats of the same issue fold into one entry reading occurred N times, last at ... rather than flooding the list.
• Push - a push notification to the myPower24 mobile app, on every device where you are signed in. Never used for Account / access, shown as a dash.

The ladder: which setting wins

Most specific wins, and the first rung holding a value decides, so a mute one rung more specific always sticks.

• Plant override (strongest) - set on one plant, beats everything else there.
• Account defaults - your account-wide values, on every plant you can see.
• Organisation default - set by organisation admins for every member, on plants you see through that organisation.
• Category default (weakest) - the built-in behaviour listed above.

If two of your organisations cover the same plant with defaults that disagree, delivery wins at that rung. A lone organisation mute still holds.

The words under each value

• set here - set at the scope on screen. On Account defaults it carries a small x to clear it.
• from your account - on a plant: inherited from your Account defaults.
• from [organisation name] - inherited from that organisation's default.
• default - nothing set anywhere, so the built-in category default applies.
• always on - an Account / access cell, locked.
• a dash - this category never delivers on this channel.

Plant markers in the pickers

• changed - the plant holds settings of its own.
• changed, no visibility - you tuned this plant but cannot currently see it, so the settings do nothing and resume if your access returns. Its scope also shows a warning that you currently receive nothing for it.

Side-effects at a glance

• Clicking a value stores an exception at the scope on screen. On a plant, clicking back to the inherited value removes it.
• Account defaults keep their row even when equal to the built-in default, because an account value still beats an organisation default, which is why they clear with the x.
• Losing sight of a plant stops its notifications. Your stored settings for it are kept.
• Joining an organisation enrols you in its plants' notifications at once, with your own settings on top of that organisation's defaults.

Tips for reading these values in the wild

• The tag shows what will happen, the words underneath show why. Hover for the sentence version.
• If a notification surprises you, open that plant's scope: it shows the effective value per category and channel and names where each comes from.
