Back up and restore the logger configuration
Scope
A logger configuration backup is a ZIP file that contains the configuration files of the LoggerV. The configuration includes the installed devices, the interfaces and ports, and the logger settings.
- Automatic backup: the logger makes a backup every 7 days.
- Manual backup: a user makes a backup from the device page.
- Restore from the server: the logger replaces its configuration with a backup from the backup server.
- Restore from a file: the logger replaces its configuration with a ZIP file from your computer.
This guide is for installers.
Location
- On the device list of the plant, click the Logger myPower tile in the Loggers card.
- Click the System tab.
- In the LoggerV Backup section, click the ⋮ menu of LoggerV Backup.
Permissions
- Viewer: cannot make or restore a backup. The system refuses the instruction.
- Editor, Installer, Full control: can make and restore a backup.
- Support session: can make a backup. Cannot restore a backup.
Backup Contents
- Contents: the files in
/var/lib/loggerVand/etc/loggerV2on the logger. - Storage: the backup server, one list for each logger serial number.
- File name: date and time, logger serial number, random ID. Example:
2026-10-21T1739-SLV211357492-dd73….zip. - Time in the file name: the logger time when the logger made the backup.
Automatic Backup
The logger makes a backup when 7 days have passed since the last attempt. If the attempt fails, the logger tries again after 7 more days.
Each attempt adds an event to the Events page:
- Config backup created: description Automatic backup triggered.
- Failed to create backup: description Automatic backup failed: and the cause.
Step 1: Manual Backup
Make a manual backup before you change devices, ports or settings.
- In the LoggerV Backup menu, click Create Backup.
- Wait for the message The backup was successfully uploaded to the server.
The logger adds the event Config backup created with the description Manual backup created and the file name.
Step 2: Available Backups
- In the LoggerV Backup menu, click Available Backups.
The Available Backups dialog shows each backup with its date and time. The file name is below the date. If the server has no backup for this logger, the dialog shows No backups available.
- Click the ⋮ menu of a backup. The menu shows Restore and Download.
Step 3: Download
- In the menu of the backup, click Download.
The browser saves the ZIP file. Keep the file to restore this configuration later from your computer.
Step 4: Restore From the Server
Make a manual backup before you restore. The restore replaces all devices, ports and settings that changed after the backup date.
- In the menu of the backup, click Restore.
- In the Proceed with caution dialog, examine the backup name.
- Click Confirm.
The logger downloads the backup and restarts the LoggerV service. At the start, the logger keeps a copy of the current configuration on the logger and applies the backup. Then the service restarts again. The logger is offline during the two restarts.
Step 5: Restore From a File
- In the LoggerV Backup menu, click Restore Own Backup.
- Select a backup ZIP file on your computer.
The restore starts immediately. No confirmation dialog shows. The logger applies the file in the same sequence as a restore from the server.
Use only a file that you downloaded from this logger or from a logger with the same devices. The logger applies all the files in the ZIP.
Logger Replacement
SolarMD staff replace a logger with the Replace logger dialog on the plant configuration page. The dialog shows the option Restore the old logger's configuration to the replacement and the date of the latest backup. The replacement logger gets the interface bindings and preferences of the old logger, keeps its own identity, and restarts one time.
The Logger tab of the plant configuration page shows the status of this restore:
- Config restore queued: the system prepares the backup, or waits for the new logger to come online.
- Restore instruction sent: the new logger restarts to apply the backup.
- Configuration restored: the restore is complete.
- Config restore failed: the cause follows. Staff can retry or cancel.
- No backups were available: configure the new logger manually.
Troubleshooting
